SJK Erte serves as a national unit for development, coordination and expertise that supports and strengthens the capacity of public libraries to promote reading and literacy among children and young people. The activities primarily focus on professionals in libraries and the development of library services for children and young people. Key forms of the activities include training, seminars and webinars, networking, expert communications and the production of various materials and tools for libraries.

The Seinäjoki City Library is responsible for the national special task assigned to it by the Ministry of Education and Culture concerning the library work for children and young people carried out by public libraries in Finland. This task is carried out by SJK Erte, which operates at the Seinäjoki City Library. The activities are funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Library

According to a decision issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture on 2 April 2019, the tasks of SJK Erte include:

  1. National coordination and support for the development of library services that promote reading among children and young people

  2. Creating and managing a national network of actors in public libraries to promote reading among children and young people and actively developing cooperation in the network

  3. Developing and embedding cooperation structures and cooperation models between libraries and early childhood education and care, schools and other actors that promote reading

  4. Acting as a cooperation partner for public libraries, for example with the Finnish National Agency for Education (literacy programme Lukutaito), the Finnish Reading Centre and other actors outside the library sector that promote reading

  5. Planning, implementing and monitoring national pilots and development projects promoting reading among children and young people, and disseminating and implementing subsequent results

  6. Developing competence in libraries to promote reading and literacy among children and young people

  7. Staying up to date on and sharing national and international research data
